Your class notes, in your own handwriting, on all your devices.

HNote is a note-taking app for students. Write with Apple Pencil, a finger or a trackpad, get a clean typed copy of each note, and keep your classes and what's due in one place.

Everything for class, in one app

Your notes come first. The rest is there when you want it.

Write by hand

Pages scroll and pinch to zoom, and ink stays sharp at any size. Every change saves a second later.

  • Pen and highlighter, in several colors and three widths each
  • An eraser that takes part of a stroke or the whole thing
  • A lasso to move, resize, recolor, duplicate or delete
  • Text boxes you can drag anywhere on the page
  • Annotate PDF, for writing right on a reading
  • Blank, lined, grid or dotted paper
  • Apple Pencil on iPad, your finger on iPhone, and a mouse or trackpad on Mac

Typed up for you

Add an Anthropic API key in Settings, and each note you close gets a clean typed version and a PDF, made on your device. Switch between Typed and Handwritten at the top of the note.

  • A note you haven't named gets a name from what's in it
  • Rename it any time, and it keeps your name
  • Each folder can turn automatic typing off
  • It costs about 15–30¢ a note, billed to your own key

Your day at a glance

The dashboard opens with today's classes, what's due soon, your recent notes and your grades. Tap a number to see everything behind it.

What's due, announcements and grades come from Canvas. Without it, you still get today from your calendar, your classes and your recent notes.

Ask HNote

Ask anything about your classes, and it says where it found the answer. It keeps the conversation going for follow-up questions, using the same API key.

  • Searches your typed notes, review sheets and study guides
  • Reads the files in a class's folder: PDF, Word, PowerPoint and text
  • Looks up a class on Canvas, and checks your calendar and due dates
  • Can search the web

Review sheets and study guides

While the app is open, HNote can make a review PDF for each class day and a study guide before each exam. You can turn this off in Settings, or run it right away.

These need Canvas, because they're built from what it says a class is covering. They also use your API key.

And the everyday things

  • Classes and projects

Each has its own color. Canvas courses add themselves, and you can add your own.

  • Folders

Keep subfolders inside a class, and make a new note right where you are.

  • All your notes

Every note from every class, newest first, with filters and Find.

  • Write offline

Each device keeps a working copy, so you can write without a connection.

  • Stays in step

Syncs every 45 seconds while the app is open, and right away when you close a note.

  • Nothing overwritten

If two devices change a note while apart, you keep both, with a copy marked as a conflict.

  • The screen stays on

It won't go to sleep while a note is open, however long the lecture runs.

  • At home on a Mac

Two fingers scroll, right-click opens a menu, and ⌘N makes a note.

Canvas, if you want it

Connect through your school's own sign-in page, Duo and all, or skip it and add your classes yourself. If you connect later, the classes you added are matched to their courses by name.

With Canvas

  • Your courses appear as classes on their own
  • Due dates and announcements on the dashboard
  • Grades, with what-if scores
  • Assignments and discussions you can read in the app
  • Turn in work and reply to discussions from HNote
  • Review sheets and study guides

Without Canvas

  • Add your classes with one button
  • Today from your calendar, if you allow it
  • Notes, typing up and Ask HNote all work
  • Syncing across your devices works the same
  • No grades, due dates or announcements
  • No review sheets or study guides

Where your notes live

You make an HNote account with a username and password, and your notes come to any device you sign in on. Here's exactly where each thing is kept.

Notes, typed versions, review sheets and study guides
On HNote's server, and in a working copy on each of your devices. They're encrypted before they reach cloud storage (Cloudflare R2), with a key for each person and file, so Cloudflare sees only scrambled files. Each account has 10 GB.
Your password
Never stored. The server keeps only a salted Argon2id hash. Passwords must be 12 to 128 characters and hard to guess.
Your Canvas sign-in
In your device's Keychain and, encrypted, with your HNote account, so your next device doesn't have to sign in again. It never goes to cloud storage. The app talks to Canvas itself; the server never does.
Canvas course files
Never on HNote's server. They're downloaded only if you turn on Canvas backup, and then only into your own iCloud Drive folder.
Your Anthropic API key
In your device's Keychain.
What you type up or ask
If you add a key, typing up, review sheets and Ask HNote send what they need to Anthropic under your key. Without a key, nothing goes there.
This website
No sign-in, cookies, scripts or analytics. It can't show or reach your notes.

Backups are your choice

Settings has two switches, both off to begin with. iCloud copies your notes to a folder you choose in iCloud Drive and works from it. Canvas backup needs iCloud on, and downloads your course files there over Wi-Fi. With iCloud off, HNote doesn't touch iCloud Drive at all.

You can leave

Delete Account in Settings removes your account right away, and your stored files follow shortly after. A note you delete on its own is kept on the server for 30 days before it's really gone.

What it doesn't do

This isn't end-to-end encryption: HNote's server holds the keys, because it has to send your notes back to you. There's also no two-factor sign-in, and no email recovery, since HNote doesn't ask for your email. Keep your password somewhere safe.

Questions

Can I read my notes on this website?

No. This site is only information, with nothing to sign in to. Your notes only open in the HNote app.

What do I need to run it?

An iPad or iPhone with iOS or iPadOS 17 or later, or a Mac with macOS 14 or later. Apple Pencil is optional.

How do I get it?

HNote is in testing and isn't on the App Store yet.

Do I need a Canvas account?

No. Skip it when it's offered and add your classes yourself. You can connect it later.

Do I need iCloud?

No. Your notes are kept with your HNote account. iCloud is an extra backup you can turn on in Settings.

Do I need an API key?

Only for typing up, Ask HNote, review sheets and study guides. Writing, syncing, classes and Canvas all work without one.

Does it work without a connection?

Yes. You can write offline, and your notes sync when you're back online.

What if I change a note on two devices?

The later save stays where it is, and the other becomes a copy beside it, named something like "Cell Transport (Conflict Nov 5)". Nothing is lost.

Can I get back a note I deleted?

It's kept on the server for 30 days, but there's no button in the app to bring it back yet.

What if I forget my password?

HNote doesn't ask for an email, so there's no reset link. A password manager is the safest place to keep it.
